He stood in her doorway, watching her. Usually he would consider this kind of behaviour creepy. He couldn't figure out exactly what she was thinking, but he knew what she'd been through. That isn't to say that Adam knew exactly how it felt to lose so many people close to him. He just understood her as much as he could.
Kayla was, luckily, in a passive mood. She was perfectly calm, in a friendly environment, and she knew that voice. She turned around.
"Hello." She smiled. "Is there something ... you need?"
She had stumbled halfway through that simple question. Somehow every time she spoke to these people, she felt as if she owed them so much she ought to be serving them. Somehow, it was worse with Adam.
There was never going to be a 'good' time to talk about what had happened. It just had to be talked about, otherwise she'd never figure it out. How could he bring it up, though? It wasn't something one just brought up in casual conversation.
She hated it. Absolutely hated it. It made her look so simple to everyone. At one point or another, she was going to have to get over it, like every other Athosian had. Why did she have to be the one who freaked out?
"Home." He said. "I remembered when I had to say goodbye. I couldn't explain it, but they all understood. We understood that we wouldn't see each other for a while. In fact, we might never see each other again."
He paused for thought, and turned to Kayla.
"I know ... it was different for you. You didn't get to say goodbye."
"Kayla?" He said gently, straightening up.

"Nah. Just wanted to see how you were going." He informed her, pleasantly.
He glanced at the paper behind her.
"Writing something?"

Okay, she had no idea what she was doing. She hadn't really taken the paper out for any specific reason.

Oh, yeah, and about all your family dying ...
No way would that work.
"Come for a walk with me." He offered.

"All right." She agreed, standing up. "Where are we going?"

"Just for a walk, you know," he smiled as she gazed at him. "Wander around a bit, have a chat."

There was a sudden crash, and Kayla instinctively covered her face, gasping.

As they passed the kitchens, there was a crash of some sort, which Adam ignored.
"I wa --" he paused when he discovered she wasn't next to him anymore.
Turning around, he discovered her cowering beside the corner. Oh, god. He hurried over to her, taking her hands away from her face.
"Kayla," he said as gently as possible. "It's okay. Someone just dropped something."
He couldn't imagine it. He couldn't imagine everytime there was a loud crash to be reliving the point in your life where you watched your parents die.

He took her arm gently and walked her down the hallway.
"I was just thinking," he began casually.
