State of the writer

Well, now that that's out of the way....

I have successfully participated in the
not_primetime 2012 Fic Exchange! The entire collection is now open for reading (medium sized fandoms and rarer pairings from large fandoms), with over a hundred stories uploaded! I haven't felt able to actually participate in a fic exchange since... I defaulted for Yuletide many years ago. :/ But this time things fell into place and, after long and hard contemplation, I decided that given the fandom choices there were definitely several options that would fit my fannish interests.

And, I was ready. Finally.

FIRST, I have been gifted with a wonderful fic about Sarah Jane Smith and her unique (imho) relationship with The Doctor, author unknown (for now, I'll fix that later when all is revealed).

Lost for Words is a sweet, surprising romp through a two-pronged adventure, spanning her pre-New Who interactions with our favorite Time Lord, showcasing Sarah Jane's quick thinking, spunk, and of course, a scream or two. I love the VERY Whovian aliens created -- really, they could have shown up in any iteration of the series. And... the extremely touching moment of import came as a complete surprise to me, which made me all awwwwwwwwwwwSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Because it cemented for me my own personal view (shared by a lot of people, judging by how she kept showing up for Tennent's Doctor) of being, not "a," but THE Companion, period. Wonderfully written and left me feeling very warm and fuzzy inside -- and missing Liz Sladen a whole lot.

*cries*

So read it! It's not very long and well worth your time!

SECOND, while I can't reveal my own creation yet (author reveals are August 7), I can say that I'm quite happy with and proud of my story. Which is saying a lot for me, since a) couldn't write much at all for several years recently, and b) it's only the second story I've written outside of Enterprise fandom in my adult life. (I barely count the Doctor Who drawerfic I cut my teeth on as a teenager.) So for everything to fall into place -- and basically with very little effort as opposed to my recent attempts -- is a real triumph for me personally.

When I can link to it/post it, I'll probably talk in more detail just to get my feelings down for future reference, but I can't tell you how pleased I am and how I'm hoping this carries over into other works I've got in the queue. The process was different, and I want to hang onto that, but lightly and without "clinging" as my meditation and dharmas are trying to teach me. Maybe that was a key I needed to unlock myself.

Anyway... yay!
