The first of May is one of my favorite days of the year, even if nothing happens. It's flowers day, dancing day, falling in love day, getting crazy because spring is really here day. Trees are in flower and everything is an outrageous hue of yellowy-green. Soon there will be lilacs. Even more importantly, soon there will be Lilies of the Valley. (Both may, in fact, be out now, but I just haven't seen them.) The world smells fresh and fragrant.
It is at this time of year when I remember again why I continue to live through those long, hard Wisconsin winters. Would the spring seem as sweet without the contrast of all that salt?
