Comments: Because
fading_sun_sock needs Hyukhae xD Taken from the shambles of a drabble I started a while ago, and repaired into some sort of plot?
Eunhyuk doesn’t (ever) understand what happens in Donghae’s head - isn’t sure he’ll ever get the tumbling thoughts flying behind wide eyes and gaping grins. He sees the Donghae presented to him - carefree, childish, who laughs loudly and pirouettes away from pain. He finds himself drawn to this, to him.
But then Donghae sleeps, and there’s a certain stillness around him - so different from his waking self - that makes Eunhyuk almost worry. He’s used to the Donghae he’s always seen; (happy, happy Donghae with weird ideas and fiery dances) this sleeping counterpart is too quiet, too motionless.
And on the darkest nights - when Donghae’s too still and wakes with tears streaming down his cheeks, Eunhyuk has the stupid wish he would never rest. He doesn’t know what to do, doesn’t know how to comfort a person he finds himself caring about more than ever. (and the thought scares him - throws him into unmapped territory where emotions are new and strong and awkward)
He finds himself more and more drawn in, this anomaly that’s Donghae slipping into his thoughts and heart and sheets every morning to wake him up with cheerful words and warm breath. Donghae tells him stories of his home and of the sea - and he thinks,
Donghae is the sea - a calm, beautiful (everyone loves it, everyone sees it, everyone admires it) surface, with a perilous undertow hidden by blue waves and reflecting sunlight. He’s the very thing he was named after; relentless and strong - and so easily polluted, so quickly torn and affected by bad weather.
Eunhyuk has no idea how he’s supposed to protect something as wide and vast and untamable as the sea. He finds himself clinging on to Donghae more and more often, wondering if it’s enough to be there and close, trying not to think about under currents crashing beneath the surface.
Donghae smiles, laughs, returns his touches with hard, forceful hugs and a look in his eyes Eunhyuk can’t decipher. I think I love you, Eunhyuk thinks, wonders if maybe, maybe somehow Donghae is trying to say the same (but he’s never understood the paradoxes of Donghae, and sometimes he thinks he never will).
“I think I need you,” he tells the phone that night, the dial tone ringing in his ears. He woke to a blaring alarm clock (instead of soft hands and even softer eyes) and he’s not sure but he thinks his heart aches more than his ears. “I think I’m going crazy here.”
He hangs up as the grainy voice of the operator interrupts.
(and across stretches of land and sky, shaky hands redial his number, find his voice in the line and tells Eunhyuk what he does - and always will - understand. I think I can’t survive without you.)
