So I know things aren't looking great in California. And I know I can't adopt the bebehs in Arkansas, or get married in Florida.
But....
Obama won. And not barely won. He like, won won. Really won. Indisputably won.
Virginia, Indiana, North Carolina.
States that haven't gone Dem since Johnson.
States that have high levels of racial segregation, de jure, de facto, economic, cultural, etc.
I know Lynchburg went McCain, but not by much.
I know Nelson, Albemarle, Buckingham, Prince Edward and fucking MONTGOMERY Counties???? Roanoke City???? Hello??? all went for Obama. I'm shocked, and yet, proud. Most people in these here parts don't understand Central/SW Va, and I'm often called to defend the area. Now I can say: see that blue right there? In the middle of the state? Yeah, thats where I went to school.
It's not about the person, people. It's about the policies and the politics and the parties. The Dems are on the edge of becoming truely progressive; I feel that this election will give them the momentum to seriously move this country forward (and by forward, I mean merely aligning ourselves with Europe and other Western countries on issues like energy, civil rights, the uses of military power, diplomacy, etc). The Bush years have seen the US decline in so many areas, like, um, energy, civil rights, military power, and diplomatic standing. It's not about abortion, people, though I was concerned about Roe. The world is no longer distant, unconnected. The world is flat, the world is global, and we need a leader who understands this, not someone who literally can't turn on a computer (he doesn't know where the power button is, no, really; he also can't use a cell phone). Obama was not my choice in the primary and I will not worship at his feet; his politics are flawed, esp. regarding gay marriage and health insurance. HOWEVER, seeing as the most important politics of this election were NOT individual issues, the most important elected thing is not the individual, Barack Obama, but the Democratic power system. Good by neo-liberal/neo-conservative Republicans; hello globalized Democrats.
::sigh::
I'm still a little drunk, from wine, from happiness, from relief. I can't sleep, my mind is racing, thankfully not with anxiety this time. I forgot my iPod and I'm at Zach's. So I'm blogging. I'm browsing the Interwebs. I'm smiling.
Tomorrow night I'll hopefully get the first full night's sleep I've had in months. Tonight? I smile.
:D
Yes we did. Yes we can. Yes we will.
