Watching Glee made me want to sing (even more than usual), so I decided to check out a choral group today. Of course I had to tame my expectations that this was going to be Glee.
When we started out, S played some notes and told me to sing along to gauge my range, whether I'm tenor or bass. I thought I would be relegated to playing the bass as I have a low speaking voice and I can never sing most pop songs; the keys are too high. But apparently I am a tenor, which is awesome! And with proper training* I should be able to sing higher!
And then there was the vocal exercise part where they taught you how to use your diaphragm to breathe. So I did. And I sounded like your classic choir boy voice! Dang! I should have joined choir in sec sch/jc.
And then they got down to singing proper. S handed out musical scores teeming with little tadpoles. These beings have a mysterious life of their own that eludes me, so I just sat unsure of when to sing what. The members around me tried to guide me but I think they're kinda new too. So I kept following the clearest male voice which was the bass, and ended up distracting the tenors around me.
And they sang choral-choral songs in strange tongues. Me no understand zee Latin. Feels a little bit snooty and pretentious. Hmmm.... why can't they just sing English pop songs (like Glee) that'd be so much more accessible and fun! But I'm only a n00b so I will open my mouth only to sing.
Definitely had fun, so will be joining them again when I can!
