Birthday!

Got a fountain pen from James (Sailor Sapporo demonstrator .. yummm ...), 2 Noodler's inks from Kyoto (Navy and El Lawrence) and a J. Herbin ink from Mouse (Vert Olive). James' parents got me a Lululemon voucher so I can go and pick out some more awesome sweat-wicking workout gear, and Ruth got me these lovely little ramekins. Mum and dad went the tried and true Asian way and gave me some money, which I'm going to use to buy this Fossil bag I've had my eye on for awhile. Is it awfully stingy of me to order it from the US instead of buying it here? Even with shipping I think it'll be significantly cheaper, and I'm annoyed that the same item from the same store is like .. half the price in the US. It was the same with the Vibram Five Finger shoes - we bought 2 pairs from the US along with some toe socks and with shipping it still came to under $200, which is how much 1 pair would have cost here.

BJJ

Entered my first competition and got pretty owned! Oh well, it's all a learning experience, and now I know that I have to really really focus on technique. James thinks I have little dog syndrome, and that I tend to think I'm tougher than I am. I bought the new Moleskine Wellness journal (because I'm a sucker for stationery) and I'm going to use that to write down stuff that I should remember and also log my workouts and stuff.

My hips are mega sore at the moment though. I might take tomorrow off, otherwise I'll be back at the physio and putting his other kid through school. It definitely affected my squats on Sunday and I don't want to mess up my Tuesday squats. I've also been slacking off with the housework a little bit, so it would be good to catch up. Though my planned dinner - a very carb and calorie dense spaghetti carbonara - had kind of relied on me doing 2 workout sessions tomorrow. I might reheat some lentils for dinner and have the pasta on Wednesday (2 x BJJ).

Eating better!

Me: is it really vain of me to constantly check my abs in the mirror?
James: *long pause* ... kind of ...

I changed my diet and increased my exercise, and the weight has been falling off. FALLING! My heaviest was 61kg and I'm currently at 55.5kg. I'm hoping it's fat and not muscle or water weight that I've lost - I'm still slowly making lifting gains (squat 112% BW, deadlift 117% BW and bench 72% BW) and I'm drinking about the same as before. I didn't think it was that noticeable, but I've had a few people comment on it without knowing that I'd changed my diet. The other morning I tried on a pair of jeans I'd bought from eBay then stashed away because they were too small, and they were a perfect fit.

I've actually found my diet changes pretty easy to sustain, which bodes well for the future. The dietitian said I was pretty much eating correctly (just too much!) and that I mainly needed more calcium. So now I try for 2 yoghurts and a piece of cheese so I don't get osteoporosis when I'm older! I'm better at eating pre and post workout, and I'm restricting carbs to mainly after exercise. I have more energy now that I'm eating more strategically, even though I'm eating fewer calories. I'm seeing her again next week, and after my caliper test I'll have a better idea of how far I have to go - the goal is 18% bodyfat, but if that coincided with a weight of about 50kg I wouldn't complain! I could probably increase my bench another 10kg in a couple of years and then I'd have my bodyweight bench ...

James poked me awake this morning and told me that he wanted to start eating at a calorie deficit too. I think he's been feeling a bit sensitive since Mouse bit his tummy flab (adding insult to injury LOL).

Things I need to do

- schedule my half-yearly teeth check-up (been soooo putting this off)
- give the apartment a really good clean
- get a massage
- bake something (I feel baking-ish, but I don't feel like eating the baked goods, if that makes sense)
