South Korea's demilitarized zone was pretty damn bleak. One can see how all the mountains on the northern side have been denuded, their trees made for firewood. One sees the sad, mad hope of the southerners as they built up all these facilities to prepare for what they thought would be reunification by now, swank train stations with hopeful slogans and something called the Peace Bell next to the Compass of Understanding, only to have those hopes shown to be pathetically naive in the face of a cynical and maliciously duplicitious military dictator. The train no longer runs north, the tours ended when a south korean lady was shot for straying from the group while up north.
On the bright side, I got to meet some truly kickass crazy people in that tour group and our young sociable and slightly lost (metaphysically) tour guide, and with them got properly intimately acquainted with the Seoul nightlife. Nothing quite like partying under the direct threat of a few hundred high calibre artillery shells and a nuke :D
