Week 2 entry for brigits_flame .

Prompt: A fool and his money

Wordcount: 265

vyvyan_wilde  and I are still using the same prompt within a prompt. This week we decided to write about someone who thought his life wasn't going so great and gives up something in exchange from something else he thought would make it better, only instead it makes it worse. Mine didn't really come out quite like that, but it's along the same lines, and all I could come up with. Also, our main character's name was to start with the letter 'R.'

As Luck Would Have It

Old Robert MacGee was in the pub late at night, nursing a mug of ale
He had once been a pirate on the high seas with a magnificent ship and sail
Robert MacGee was a crafty old salt and never did his luck run out
With guns or swords, cards or dice, he held his own against any lout
When the colors were flying, there was dread on the water and no man dared to flee
His crew was loyal, the First Mate steadfast and thought forever it would be
Then came one night when he’d drunk too much and his wits sadly left him
He was at this same pub when a chap came to sit with a smile most winsome
The stranger challenged MacGee to try his luck at a game of chance
Robert thought for a moment and asked the man the stakes with a glance
“My ship or yours,” he replied with a grin, setting his dice on the table
The pirate gave a laugh and cracked his knuckles knowing he was able
“I’m the luckiest man alive,” MacGee boasted aloud, “how could I lose?”
How grand it would be to have two great ships as well as two crews
The game was close, the play was tight, he thought he’d win by a hair
But by the end he lost his ship and his crew to that stranger fair and square
That’s the story of Robert MacGee, who lost all he had in a game of dice
He learned that night good fortunate ends and even luck has a price
