8 is so pragmatic! I mean, I had to establish the ground rules for the canon-divergent AU right off the bat, and since the fic as a whole was going to be Erik POV, I knew I wanted a prologue from another POV to set the stage. But I didn't want to give away too much, so that eliminated Charles POV, and Moira was the next most obvious bet -- she's our gateway character into XMFC in many ways, so she's a good outside perspective through which to introduce the world. So that line just kind of immediately establishes what is different in this AU: Charles already works for the CIA when Moira meets him. I think it works? Although, honestly, it still feels a little weird to me that the entire fic is in one POV except for that one scene. (Originally, there was going to be a lot of jumping around with flashbacks, and half the fic would've been Charles POV, so having Moira POV didn't feel so out of place. But then the fact that I had a week to write the entire fic sank in, and it got...streamlined.)

9, um, I don't even know. That fic was as much a love letter to NYC as to Charles/Erik, so it felt right? I'm crap at first lines. That one just kinda happened and I didn't give it too much thought.
