I am way, way behind on Merlin. By which I mean I finally sat down and started watching S4 tonight. Halfway through 4x02, I just have to say -- ( minor spoilers )
Merlin's massive anachronisms can be super distracting. (The complete lack of any mention of Christianity really threw me when I started watching the show. In actual medieval literature, people are calling on God and seeing miracles everywhere. I get that keeping religion out makes it less likely to offend someone, but it has nothing to do with actual early medieval times.) I try to treat the show as not even sort of set in the history of this Earth. They're in some sort of alternate universe where the rules about things like how servants and masters relate are very different. Still, it doesn't even apply its own rules consistently.
I think some of the acceptance is the influence of Arthur. Not only is he dating Gwen, he's just elevated a bunch of commoners to the knighthood, so clearly he values people regardless of class. Maybe the Council members are trying to get on his good side by being less firm about class divisions. Maybe?
Lancelot was the best thing about 4x01-02, especially the way he shared Merlin's secret. Merlin seemed so relieved to have one peer he didn't have to hide from. That didn't last long. Fucking drapery indeed. :(
