So. After three days and one night of taking pictures, I present: Dublin, or at least the parts of it I like to take pictures of. I didn't stray much from the city centre for these, because, frankly, I LIVE in city centre, and that's where I tend to wander.
Let's start with Trinity College, where I've been studying. This is what the front gate of Trinity looks like from the outside, at night:
Trinity is all walled in. There are only a few gates to the outside world, and if those are closed, you're can't get in unless you've got an ID. So when I say "on campus", I really mean "within these walled confines which could probably outlast a British siege and probably have". We students are a sheltered lot. This is that same front gate, from the inside:
All right, that's more of the front square than just the gate, but note the blue clock on both. Here's what you see right after you pass through the front gate:
And now, some random shots around campus. Random nifty garden place:
The Pav, a.k.a. the on-campus pub:
Yes, there is a pub ON CAMPUS. Welcome to Ireland. You should see the crowds outside this place on Friday night.
The Samuel Beckett Centre, a.k.a. the School of Drama, a.k.a. the ugliest fucking building in Trinity, which is where I take all my classes:
And the ugly library, which has incredibly inconvenient hours and only one copy of any given book needed by thirty students at once:
Someday, I'll figure out what the brass ball thing in front is supposed to symbolize. Someday.
That's enough of campus. Nassau Street, which borders Trinity to the south, is very visually boring, but has one particular shop that will NEVER stop being funny:
KNOBS AND KNOCKERS, PEOPLE. And it's not a porn shop!
Heading on over to Merrion Square, which is where Oscar Wilde used to live. This is Oscar Wilde's old house:
This is the plaque on the Wilde house:
Oscar has his own plaque too, right next to that, but it's all modern and boring looking, so screw it.
Merrion Square Park isn't very big, but I like it. This is the park from the street, to show you how not very big it is:
A couple of Merrion Square pictures:
But most importantly, Merrion Square is where kaydee chills with Oscar.
And, of course, in a tiny alleyway off Merrion Square, we have our favorite restaurant OTP:
Now we move on to kaydee's LOVE AFFAIR with
Look, Dublin is not an architecturally interesting city. It's also not an interesting city by any standards, really, unless you like pubs, in which case it's definitely the city for you. More pubs later. But St. Stephen's Green is a fabulous little (22-acre, I think) park, and I lurve it. So, to follow, FAR TOO MANY PICTURES of St. Stephen's Green.
I also occasionally became distracted by my own shadow.
These things happen.
And statues. There are an unhealthy number of art thingys around Dublin dedicated to the Famine.
There's a much creepier one on the river, but I didn't head over there, so meh.
Statue of Wolfe Tone, who was a key figure in Irish resistance against England, 1798 rebellion, blah blah blah, but most importantly has a GREAT name:
WOLFE TONE. I'm going to name a hamster that someday.
Random nifty architecture shot:
It's the Department of the Taoiseach, which is something government-related but apparently does not translate from Irish, so lord knows what they do in there.
Then tonight, I headed out at around 10pm to chase the sunset. Yes, the sun sets at 10pm. It's kind of ridiculous. Granted, I've been in northern Sweden in late June, where the sun does not so much "set" as "hang about the treeline for a couple of minutes and then head right back up". But still. Along the way, I got distracted.
HOT MEN IN LEATHER. Seriously, there was a MASSIVE X3 ad campaign around Dublin in the weeks leading up to the movie, and it was the most distracting thing EVER. Um. Anyway.
Doyle's, my pub of choice:
There will be a few more pub shots later on.
Looking up O'Connell Street (Dublin's main drag) at dusk:
A few shots of the River Liffey:
(I got distracted by the moon.)
And now, on to Temple Bar, the heart of Dublin's nightlife and tourist industry. A lot of these shots are a bit blurry due to the growing darkness and the masses of people.
THE Temple Bar, although not really the best pub on the street. And let me tell you, the pubs are chockablock here, and every last one PACKED.
The Project Arts Centre, which produces the best (and worst) of experimental theatre in Dublin. I've seen a few shows here.
LOOK HOW PACKED THE PUBS ARE. It's 10:30pm on a Friday night here, btw.
The Oliver St. John Gogarty, winner of Weirdest Pub Name. I had a good night here once.
Aaaaand...I'm spent.
