ECCC Aftermath

Mar 09, 2011 02:04

I've been busy and haven't checked LJ and most of my online haunts since the 4th.

For the first two days I worked familiar territory: Admissions. This year the con rented iPhones with QR reader software, so we could scan prepaid registration slips and, since the credit card readers also keep track of the number of sales, keep a pretty accurate count of how many tickets we sold. It was neat, and I hope they use them again next year. Friday was pretty busy, and we got really slammed Saturday; Shatner's signing and photo times were crazy. On Saturday alone ECCC had a 20% increase of people coming through admissions than 2009 had for the entire con.

Sunday I and another volunteer who worked Admissions moved to Media Guests -- we both requested to try something new if possible -- but most people already had their assignments so we had a lot of free time and just took care of odds and ends and looked for things to do. I felt kinda idle and guilty about that. Hopefully I can try Media Guests next year, though part of me will miss the folks I know in Admissions, so I'll have to take the time to say hi to them all if I do work Media.

Two really great improvement this years, in my opinion, were the dedicated (3rd floor "hidden level") area for the media guests and the dedicated volunteer coordinator, aka Minion Wrangler. A new bonus was the Minion HQ for volunteers. Also awesome was when a desperate call went out Friday night for more volunteers among the PAX Enforcers. The poster expected maybe 2 or 3 people; instead, 15 showed up. Thumbs up [E]ers.

Between coloring at the table, headlesspuppet visited various artists, went to a few portfolio reviews, and made new connections. Surprisingly (in a pleasant way) a few remembered her (and me) from past conventions and asked for more info on a couple projects she mentioned, including Pavlov's Dream. So, though I may be risking jinxing things, and I'm not promising anything, things went well.

Well, time to finish packing for Boston.
