Everyone Loves a Vampire

I intended to leave the topic behind, buried and to not be mentioned again, but while looking for stock images of books to make avatars from I stumbled upon some glowing reviews of Stephanie Meyer. Growing u I read my share of bad books, novels filled with melodrama, clichés, and Mary Sues and Gry Sues, but I plead ignorance, and though some of ( Read more... )

Moreover, the author herself claims in an interview that all her characters are basically good and if not that, their intentions are always good. Doesn't this make for rather boring characters and villains? If the villain is essentially good, why worry?
On that point I have to disagree. Wars are fought by good people with incompatible ideals.

Agreed, people have very different ideals of good and that's where the fun starts! Course if they're so good that any conflict is utterly contrived, that's no good.

Personally I think a sympathetic villain is a great thing though a bit unsatisfying when they meet their end (particularly when they're more likable than the protagonists). Not to say evil villains don't have their place but its rare to see one of those that hasn't been done to death.

Say Kelsie, have you started writing any longer stories yet? At the least I can assume you wouldn't write something sappy :)

That reminds me of the short vampyre story I wrote with Sarah. I actually have stuff I write with someone else, but we'd be the first to tell you it's utter emo, angst, and fluff -- it varies. It's pure crack, but it's also ridiculously fun to write. Meyers' is part Laurell K. Hamilton (ew) and part Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but people act as if she's new and fresh, i.e. "Oh vampires who don't hurt humans and love! omg!"

Oh! I remember this, great fun :) I miss Sarah's humor.

You should write a proper vampire story. Make them right monsters and sloppy to boot. Perhaps a memoirs of a newly turned vampire who's just getting used to the whole shebang as well as trying to fend off the advances of hysteric Mary Sue type undead.
