It might have been a year ago that someone told me about Morrowind, but when I looked online the screenshots didn't catch my eye. In fact, I thought it rather clunky and unappealing. Lineage 2, in a way, has spoiled me, although I do still like games with less pretty graphics as long as the gameplay is good; yet the only reasons this person ever gave me to play were his testimonials that he'd played it and liked it and chastising me for not trying it just because it wasn't visually appealing to me. Never was I told anything about the game. Never was I sent links to gameplay videos or trailers. He wasn't compelling at all. The only links I received were unimpressive still shots, and so I pushed all thought of trying it aside, not even bothering to dig deeper online.
But recently I talked to someone else about Oblivion, part of the Morrowind series, and this time my interest was peaked, although not because of the graphics, although he did say, "technically, the graphics are superb...the landscapes are incredible, but the artistry is awful. What American game companies need to do is fire their artists and hire Korean ones and Korean game companies fire their programmers and hire American ones." It was the way he described the gameplay -- quests that were interesting, an open endedness to the game, an impressive AI, etc. -- that caught my attention. I now want to try the series.
My point is that how one goes about promoting entertainment matters. Giving reasons why something is good is much more convincing that just telling someone "Try it. It's good." That only works with food and people whose tastes I already trust.
Now for a few links as a break between game talk.
brazor showed me this video of
Undefeatable, a bad bad B movie action flick, but so bad it treads the fine line into the territory of good.. Leading the movie is the queen of martial arts, [...] Cynthia Rothrock (kill me now Cynthia!!). Rothrock can't really act worth a hill a beans really [but] is not the worst actor in this picture, in fact she is the best which gives you some indication at the level this film is made. [...] bad guy Don Niam was atrocious. Niam, sporting the worst, most permed mullet ever seen is so ridiculously cheesy that he merely has to appear on screen for me to laugh manically at him. When he speaks he is even funnier. His face has a kind of "please hit me!" look to it and the way his mullet sways about is very amusing.
Particularly a superbly rough fight between Don Niam and John Miller that ends hilariously (it involves a hook and an eye socket but you'll really have to see it.). To sum up how cheesy and stupid this film is: In the middle of the climactic fight scene between Niam and Miller, they both tear their shirts off (for no good reason) and continue the fight bare chested, yet miraculously they are oiled up to the eye balls. It is an hilariously macho scene that comes across as more homo-erotic, with oily men grabbing and hitting each other[...]
Also, anyone want a
germ plushy?
tenpura posted that link many moons back. They're cute, and I've been thinking of getting a few for people.
Back to the topic of games, I had a little chat about light elves and Lineage 2 and Vasili with Zeph. Zeph: What kind of melee is she playing now?
kayay: light elf. she wanted to make the fruitiest elf ever, so he's got pink hair and that awful hairdo.
Zeph: Oh noooooooo
kayay: I think she feels sorry for how bad his hair is XD
kayay: she wants an archer
Zeph: Hm...SR
kayay: zeph's long lost brother
Zeph: He can STAY LOST with that hair
kayay: humans should have a mullet hairdo. each race should have one bad hairdo option.
Zeph: Orcs get...afro?
kayay: YES! THAT'S GENIUS
Zeph: Next chronicle, I vote for...DISCO GARMENT
kayay: The game devs should listen to you.
Zeph: Disco ball music crystals. They spin and sparkle over your head while spreading a funky groove
kayay: screencap daro or cookie and give him an afro
Zeph: *shudder* That's frightening
kayay: cookie dancing with afro!
Zeph: He would need a new dance
Zeph: /socialsatudaynightfever
I need an orc screencap now!
