Leave it to me to break not only my own copper kettle but my folks, and the same way more or less. The first time I had the burner on and forgot that I hadn't used the whistling kettle, so long after the water had evaporated I remembered. As soon as I touched it with a potholder the spout fell off. All the solder had melted. That was six months ago roughly. Yesterday I remembered to turn off the fire... mostly. It was still on very very low, but over time very very low is enough. Once again I went into the kitchen to see a discolored kettle, shut off the burner, and tried to pick the kettle up with a potholder. Plunk. Mr. Spout left Mrs. Kettle.
The lesson: Keep your kettles away from me.
