Its been two weeks since I entered St' Andrew's. Next week will have a one week break...and a much needed one to rest and recharge...as well as to finish up my lesson plans.
Make no mistake...teaching is tough. Its worse if you're faced with students who think they're bloody smart..like to act cool/tough...and enjoy talking back to their teacher. Its fine if you're teaching for just a couple of months...but the bond is 3 years...and I can just imagine how jaded and tired a teacher would feel having to teach these kids day in day out. I believe most teachers genuinely want to teach because they have a passion to...but seriously speaking, how much satisfaction can you derive if you're faced with such kids everyday for the next 3 years? Right now, I would strongly discourage anyone from teaching...not because I don't think it is a good and rewarding profession...but because of the bond.
Think kids nowadays are too sheltered. They don't know the meaning of hardship and take everything for granted. Was talking to a couple of my friends and we agreed that this generation of kids is so unlike those of our generation. Even though there were times when we were noisy and rowdy in class, we knew our priorities in life...which is to study hard, do well, and pass our examinations. That was our goal, albeit a short term one...but at least we had one. Kids nowadays just don't care...they can actually hand up a blank exam script and they don't care what happens to them if they fail....which brings me to the question, why are they in school in the first place? They come to school...and what do they do? Sleep, irritate the rest of their classmates, frustrate the teacher. And what can the teacher do?? Nothing much other than scream and shout. Even corporal punishment is not allowed...for in doing so, the kid will just complain to their parents who might come down and create a big fuss about it. And that is the joke...the kid, and not the teacher, complains to the parents. I mean...what the hell is our society coming to?? I dread to think that these kids might be potential leaders for the future.
