Otakon, Photos, Awards, Oh My

Aug 09, 2009 20:35

So, I went to Otakon, um, weeks ago. But then I was busy, lost internet connection, went to an amusement park, and was busy again, so…that’s why I’m talking about it now.

It was pretty fun, even though my interest in anime has waned recently. I went with a couple friends…and a couple people I didn’t really know to reduce hotel fees. We wandered around, bought stuff, took pictures, bought stuff, went to a panel or two, bought stuff, watched some anime, and bought stuff. Did I mention we bought stuff?

Also, lesson of the trip: pre-register, even if you’re not sure you’re going. I stood in the registration line with someone I barely knew for THREE HOURS. I’ve never stood in a three hour line for ANYTHING except maybe a new ride at Disney. THREE. HOURS. OUTSIDE. IN THE SUN. AND HUMIDITY.

We also ditched on Sunday and went to the Baltimore Aquarium instead. We like fishies. And dolphin shows. And jellyfish. Although the escalator there caught on my jeans and tried to eat me. That was mildly terrifying.

There’s a definite non-anime slant to these… Also, I’m shy as hell and approaching strangers is really not my thing, so I didn’t take a ton of pictures, even though there were a lot of cool costumes.

This reminds me of a puzzle! Luke, who I saw in the aforementioned three-hour line.

Zora Armor Link from Twilight Princess. This costume is seriously sweet. All those scales are individual. It’s gorgeous.

The Dread Pirate Roberts with an R.O.U.S. He said, “As you wish,” and made all the girls taking pictures giggle and swoon a little bit.

Dr. Horrible is heeeeere! In his evil red costume, even! There were a couple other Dr. Horrible’s wandering around in the white outfit, but since just getting the nerve to ask this guy for a picture made my heart pound for ten minutes afterward, I figured one was good enough.

A cool steampunk group. Steampunk was big this year, lots of costumes and booths selling accessories. My friend Ellen and I have thought it was cool for a while now, so it was a pleasant surprise.

The Fifth Doctor, the Ninth Doctor, and the TARDIS! Oh man, seeing Doctor Who cosplayers there pretty much made my life. I saw Five in the pre-reg line the night before it started, Four, Six, and Eight were wandering around while I was in the three-hour line, and I saw Nine on Saturday morning. I finally caught up with these two by cornering them near the escalator. XD So many times we would be behind the Doctor as we walked somewhere, and when we turned a corner, they disappeared. It was very fitting.

Also, these two each had the proper sonic screwdriver from their era. I’m still geekily giddy about it.

Some guy from a Final Fantasy game that Jane chased down with my camera because his costume was ‘swank’.

APPA

This Pyramid Head was very committed to the bit. He lurched around with his big knife, blocking hallways and everything. We were behind him for a bit. I watched him slowly drag himself over to a con volunteer, ask a question, and then slowly lurch away. It was kind of amazing.

Onto my purchases!

T-Shirts! Zelda, Zelda, Mario, and the funniest meme combination ever.

Pins. Boo is cute.

My stuffed Komodo Dragon. His name is Philippe.

Classic Doctor Who logo patch and Kaoru patch. They had Kaoru, Hikaru, and Hani, and Kaoru is my favorite of those three.

Stickers. Ex-ter-min-ate.

Some FMA figurine thing and it’s box.

My sweet TARDIS door poster. Also featuring the jolly rancher pillow I just bought.

So, yeah. Good times. Although the masquerade wasn't very good this year. I also went to see Spring Awakening again, with some friends this time. And those friends had neighbors with free tickets to see Paul McCartney in concert, and I got one! We were in the nosebleed section of a huge stadium, but it was still really awesome. Best free concert ever.

ALSO, I was gone when they announced the results of this, but:

YAY~ Fifteen Almost Simultaneous Reactions Following the Blah Blah Blah won Best Drabble! That’s such a surprise; there’s so much good fic written in this fandom. Thanks to all the voters and nommers, and congrats to all the winners!

...Summer's almost over. Oh well, at least that means good TV shows start again.
