Fitting Woes - 18th Century gown

Nov 06, 2008 00:21

Well, I rushed together an 18th Century gown for a Halloween event and I'm so unhappy with it. I don't know if I can fix it :( I had a horrible time trying to sew and fit the bodice. It is just dreadful and I'm embarrassed by it. It doesn't help that shot taffeta shows every wrinkle and flaw. I'll never make a full gown out of it again!

Are there any suggestions as to what I can do to correct the fit of my bodice? None of my fitting books address this sort of thing, they are all for modern clothing. My only hint was in the Jean Hunniset Period costume book. A very vague reference to if you have a wrinkle pointing from your side seam up to your bust point, you need to rip the side seam and realign the sides somehow? I guess I can try that, but I'm doubtful :( I also wonder if my bodice is a tad too long?

I couldn't get the back to lay flat at all either. The center back seam looks like poop. I tried sewing it twice. It's still puckery no matter how much I carefully press it with a tailor's ham and what not.

Here's my sucky dress. (I didn't finish adding the trim to the sleeves and skirt, just as well because I have to fix the bodice anyway). My hair turned out funky too, but I'm not being too hard on myself for that because it was my first attempt, I had no practice run. Hair can always be redone, the dress is not so easy to redo :( *cry face*

Any hints or fitting advise would be greatly appreciated. *sigh*
