Discussion Question

I haven't been doing this every week, but I think this week's discussion question at creativefantasy could potentially be interesting, so I'm posting it here in my personal LJ as well:

So, let's talk popular fantasy authors. Or rather, a specific popular author, and who better to start with than the man many call the father of modern fantasy: J. R. R. Tolkien. And some questions to get you going: What do you think of his writing? Is he over-hyped? Does he deserve the praise and attention he gets? Were the movies better than the books? Would you recommend a fantasy reader read his books? Would you recommend another author instead of Tolkien, and why?
