I sort of stole this from
bdbdb. She posted a bunch of her favorite quotes a couple weeks ago, and I am blatantly copying her. :) These are just some random ones I really enjoy.
I don't know where all of these are from - please let me know if you recognize one. :)
Maybe there aren’t any good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you’re hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they’re always worth being scared for, and hoping for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that’s what it has to be. No good friends, no bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with, people who build houses in your heart. - Pet Cemetary, Stephen King
In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
I don’t think we did go blind, I think we are blind, Blind but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do not see. - Blindness, Jose Saramago
This is free ground. All the way from here to the Pacific Ocean. No man has to bow. No man born to royalty. Here we judge you by what you do, not by what your father was. Here you can be something. Here’s a place to build a home. It isn’t the land - there’s always more land. It’s the idea that we all have value, you and me, we’re worth something more than the dirt. I never saw dirt I’d die for, but I’m not asking you to come join us and fight for dirt. What we’re all fighting for, in the end, is each other. - The Killer Angels, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness. - Maya Angelou
Do you want to hear something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more. - Erica Jong
Surprisingly, there's someone, not the prettiest or the most available, but you know that in another life it would be her. Or him, don't you find? A small quickening. The room responds lightly to being entered. Like a raised blind. Nothing intended, and a long way from being anything, but you catch the glint of being someone else’s possibility. - The Real Thing, Tom Stoppard
Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. - The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery
The great thing about vacuuming is that when you’ve finished, you can see all the marks on the carpet and you can say “My god, I did that.” - Armin Shimmerman
When a character is born, he immediately acquires such an independence even from his own author… That everyone can imagine him in a whole host of situations in which his author never thought of placing him… They can even imagine his acquiring, sometimes, a significance that the author never dreamed of giving him. - Unknown
The scariest thing is to not know your place in the world. The most painful state of being is remembering the future. Particularly one you can never have. (Possibly from Unbreakable?)
Dreams are not meant to be understood anymore than tragedy can be averted. Life happens to us. We learn to be grateful when things are good, and to count our blessings when thing are bad. And the only certainty in all of it is that it all just keeps happening. - Harold Abbott, Everwood
Illyria: We cling to what is gone. Is there anything in this life but grief?
Wesley: There’s love, there’s hope, for some. There’s hope that you’ll find something worthy. That your life will lead you to some kind of joy. That after everything, you can still be surprised.
Illyria: Is that enough? Is that enough to live on?
- Angel
Perhaps the lesson here is that to fight the good fight, you have to remember it is what you are really fighting. Perhaps the lesion is that trying is not always enough, but trying is still all you have. - Unknown
What does it matter how a man falls?
When the fall is all he has left, it matters a great deal.
- The West Wing
Sometimes I feel we live through things only to be able to say that it happened, that it wasn’t to someone else, that it was to me. Sometimes we live to beat the odds. - The Jacket
Be strong enough to wait, watch, stand back and believe that you don’t need to push or pull, that stagnation doesn’t always mean death. That sometimes it’s okay to stay still. And hope. - Everwood
Man is quite insane. He wouldn’t know how to create maggots, but he creates gods by the dozen. - Unknown
I always go more boldly forward when I don’t know what lies ahead. After all, the worst you can do is die, and you’ve got to go sometime. - Unknown
To be nobody but yourself, in a world which is trying to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. - e.e. cummings
For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always come obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life will begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. - Unknown
When we look at a statue of someone great, we think they’ve got something we don’t. We are trained to think that only a tiny percentage of us have the stuff it takes to be a hero. Not many of us will cure any diseases or slay any dragons, but every single one of us, every single one of us, is called to be a king, a queen, a hero in our ordinary lives. We don’t build statues to worship the exceptional life, We build them to remind us of what is possible in our own. (This has everything to fo with making boots) - A Timberland ad
In other news... I think I might be excited about getting a real roommate soon. My semi-permanent guest has kind of grown on me, and I have a feeling when she leaves next week, my apartment will feel much bigger and quieter than before she got here.
I am really sad I am not in Columbia this weekend. All my film nerds are celebrating a friends birthday and I miss them.
Also, this month is film nerds heaven. Sunset Blvd, Casablanca, and The Philadelphia Story are all being shown in theatre settings around LA. I hope I can see all of them. Lawrence of Arabia, which I've never seen, is being shown in 70mm too, and I think that would be awesome.
Everwood finale on Monday. I will miss you!
