"But why must I go, Major?" Jeannie had been protesting profusely the whole way here.
"Because if you fall into the wrong hands, bad things could happen." He was totally making this up. The truth of the matter was that Jeannie hadn't granted him one wish that turned out well. Between that and his fight with Alanna yesterday, Kawalsky figured it best to cut his losses.
"But I am in your hands!"
Yeah, he thought, and Alanna nearly dropkicked my ass across the hallway for it. "But someone could steal you away."
"But Maaaajor."
"Jeannie, somewhere out there there's a guy who needs you. Go find him. Then send me a postcard from wherever you are."
Jeannie sighed. "Yes Major. Is there anything you would like to wish for before I go?"
Kawalsky thought about it for a moment. One of the many things he had thought about, but hadn't been game enough to try, was to know about his future. What did it hold? Did he even have one? But then he remembered what Sam said about screwing up the future by knowing things. Besides, if he wasn't meant to live long, or wasn't meant to stay in Fandom or be with Alanna, then he didn't want to know. He liked things as they were right now, and he wanted to enjoy it while it lasted. He could worry about tomorrow when it came.
"I could go a cookie."
Jeannie smiled and blinked. A giant cookie appeared in Kawalsky's hand. "It was nice to meet you, Major."
Kawalsky gave a wave and held up the bottle with his free hand. Jeannie disappeared inside and, after fixing the stopper in place, he tossed the bottle back into the ocean. It disappeared under the surface, then bobbed back up, eventually drifting out to sea.
A little disappointed and no longer looking forward to Christmas now that he wasn't on good terms with Alanna, Charlie headed back to the school. Things could have been worse. At least he had a cookie.
