Oooooookay, here the first part of the story! Monkey's Love Bacon!! The Story of Shashi and Kashu!
"Mother... it's so dark and the weather man said it was nice outside to day. Can I-" "No Shashi!! We've been through this hundreds of times!! The sun is too dangerous for you. God will burn your skin with it because you are not human! Now go off and read the beginning of 1st Peter in the bible. You're behind in your studies."
That's me, Sohma Shashi at 3 1/2 years old. Sad, isn't it? That's what happens when your born with a curse. You grow up never knowing seeing an actual tree, feeling grass between your toes or the wind of your hair, or feeling the warms rays of God's great sun. This is also what happens when a woman leaves her faith for a man and the man curses her with a demon child... a child who transforms... into a monkey.
You see long ago my mother wasn’t such a couk. Infact she was a very smart woman full of hopes and dreams. Don’t believe me? Well then I’ll tell you!
Long ago…. Okay, maybe no too long, my mother was a Nun in training. For the life of I can’t remember the actual term! So anyway, she was 16 and lived in a convent. She was so beautiful too! Long straight black hair and hazel brown eyes. Soft vibrant skin and a smile that would make angels rejoice. When she turned 21 her life was soon to change, she was going to graduate into a full-fledge nun in a matter of months. That is until she met a feisty, yet handsome, young man who wanted refuge in the monastery. He was beaten and bruised and nearly collapsed on the steps of the church at night. But my mother helped him inside and cleaned him up.
“So what’s your name?” he asked her.
“Sister Mary Pa-”
“No, your real name.”
“Eh? Uh… Yume…” she blushed.
“Arigato, Yume. I’m Higure, Sohma Higure,” he reached out to shake her hand. She shyly excepted it.
Months went by and Higure still stayed at the church. He took a job as cook there but not just for money, because that way he could see more of Yume for on of her chores was dishwasher. With that time together Yume was slowly falling in love. And before she new it, her feelings came to blossom one day.
She was doing some gardening one day when a storm began brewing in the skies above. When she was going to head inside, she saw him climbing a tree. He was attempting to rescue a nest of eggs whose mother was the victim to a hungry cat.
“Hurry! The storm is getting worse!!” She yelled as a fierce gust of wind blew against her face. He got to the nest, covered it with his jacket and jumped down. Yume followed him to his room just as lightning began to strike. Moments later the power went out and near darkness consumed every corner of the church. Higure pulled out a flash light from his drawer and hovered it over the eggs that sat on his desk. Meanwhile, Yume lit candles around the room. She walked over to the desk and set one next to the eggs.
“Do you think that will work?” she asked as they both stared at the eggs in anticipation.
“Well we won’t know for a while.” It was silent for a few moments between them until ruling out the harsh rain, wind, and booming thunder. “Ya know, I heard somewhere that the first thing a bird sees after it hatches, it assumes it’s his mother.”
“Wow! That’s amazing. But that’d be rather funny if it thought you were it’s mother!” she giggled.
He laughed with her, “Yes it would. But who says it’ll see me first maybe it will be you.”
“Oh no! I couldn’t be it’s mother!” she exclaimed while waving her hands in front of her face.
“Why not? I think you’d be great at it. I’ve seen you play with the children of the city when they come here. The really like you. You always look so happy and exited,” Higure commented as he placed the flash light on the desk.
Yume blushed, “But I can’t be a mother… I don’t think I’d be good even if I were able to marry and have children. But you’d be a great father! So protective and caring for eggs that might not even hatch.”
“But they will if you help me…Yume, there’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you…” thunder crashed in the distance. He placed his hand on hers.
“Yes?” He’s so warm… even after getting rained on….
“I love you Yume! I know I shouldn’t because you’re nearly a nun but I can’t stop thinking about you. Everyday is better than the last when I’m with you! I don’t want to ever leave your side!” Higure confessed.
“But…but…I…” the words played on her tongue wanting to be let out. But her mind hesitated until her heart decided for her, “I love…you..too…Gure-kun.” The thunder crashed even closer that time as Higure leaned in and kissed Yume. At first she wanted to hesitate but it felt so different and appealing that she couldn’t resist. And thus, passion gave way to reason. Yume broke her solemn vow and lost her innocence to a man whom she wasn’t married too.
For a while, they kept their relationship secret until Yume became ill. The head sister Joseph Claude called for a doctor and he diagnosed Yume. She was pregnant.
“Pregnant?! How can this be?!” Claude demanded.
“I’m sorry sister! Please forgive me!” Yume pleaded.
“It is not I you should ask forgiveness from…” and with that Yume and Higure were banished from the church. With no where to go, they headed to a place he regretted having to go, the main house. He was excepted back even after the trouble he caused, but only because his love bared a child of their blood line. Yume was miserable her first few months. She wasn’t gaining weight and always cried but when Higure explained, “If you don’t take care of yourself the baby will die. Yume please, eat something. I’m here with you. I won’t leave you. I want to be the father you said I could be.” So, she did just that and within her 2nd trimester the results showed themselves.
Yume became excited and happy again, “I’m going to be a mother. Something I never thought I could be! I’m so happy.”
Then finally the day came and I was born. My father held me before my mother and I changed into a little black baby monkey. When Yume heard the news she went into shock and nearly died. The care takers of the head informed them both of the curse, something Higure never knew about. But regardless of the fact he could never hold me he kept his promise to my mother and stayed by her.
But unfortunately for him someone had other plans. The reason why Higure went to the church was because he was being hunted by ex-gang members. When they found out he was back at the main house they waited for him to leave one day and shot him right outside their house. I was only 6 months old.
Mother then cursed her life. She cried out one night, “Lord please forgive me for what I’ve done!! My love is dead and he left me with his demon of a child!! Is this my punishment?!?! Am I to raise this demon child as payment for my actions against you?!?!?! You lied to me Higure!! You evil man!! I hate you!”
She would then never leave the house without her clothes covering ever inch of her. She wouldn’t let me leave the house at all. She’d lie to me an tell me, “Mother doesn’t want God to scorn you my love. So you must stay indoors so he doesn’t burn you with his light.” But in all honesty, she just thought of me as a burden that she’d have to carry for all her life in order to go to heaven. She draped long black sheets over all the windows and rarely used lamps unless it was to read and cook.
I would watch TV when she left the house. It was my only window to the world. I wanted to take pictures of the world outside so I would never forget it. I’d dream of going to places like Mexico, Italy, China and America. She’d home school me but only on things in the bible and I never knew about my curse. I didn’t know I would change into an animal. Not until I was 5 years old and I ran away one night. I accidentally ran into and an old man only yards from my house. I ran home crying to myself.
I am a demon!! I am a demon!! I have to get back inside before God burns me!!
Mother waited for me at the door and held me as she cried, “I warned you Shashi! You can’t leave the house ever again!!” But then before me 6th birthday, Mother died of an anemia she developed. She never went to a doctor. She was afraid he’d give her more bad news and she’d have to suffer again with another burden. So I was adopted by another family who’s child was cursed. He was a little boy, named Kashu.
