The lights of the city flickered and glowed from down below as he stared out of the rain streaked window from his economy class seat. This was his way out of Seoul, out of this country. Later, he would often tell himself this.
Lee Jinki will always wonder whether this was the right decision; traveling to New York to study medicine and eventually becoming a world-class doctor. Just another one of many.
It’s been five years since that fateful day; the day only his parents knew of his departure and his band-mates -- no, friends -- found his bed cold and room bare. The Jinki he was then was now completely different from the past. It was as if he had been transformed into a completely different human being. He was less clumsy and wore glasses most of the time.
He sat at a small table for two in his usual café, tucked into the corner with a fantastic view of the bustling street below as he quietly sipped his cup of coffee. He’s dated casually since his time in medical school. One girl, Jung Jessica, was in his oncology seminar class for most of the first semester. They had dated on and off for several months but broke it off when she started seriously dating his college senior, Donghae, who was majoring in neurology.
Then there was Luna; lovely, sweet, adorable Luna who was his junior by nearly four years. They went on a few dates, but Jinki felt uncomfortable because she was too good and too innocent for him to corrupt in any way. He took her first kiss, if he recalled correctly.
He still keeps in touch with his ex band-mates, but it’s just mostly Kibum who calls him and brags about how fantastic his relationship with Nicole is. But of course he doesn’t mind. Even if he doesn’t say anything, it’s just nice listening to Kibum blabber on and on. It’s sort of like a memory from home as it reminds him of the easy-going days and the long-gone summers. He’s content, even if it only lasts for a short while.
It’s like how he doesn’t mind not seeing anyone from Seoul in years and how he doesn’t mind being single either. He’s just Jinki, and he likes his time to himself.
It wasn’t until Taeyeon noona had invited him to lunch to meet a friend of hers that transferred from Seoul University, apparently majoring in architectural design. He never would have guessed that when he’d meet her, he’d fall head over heels in love with her because he didn’t think much of anything when he had accepted the invitation.
She went by the name Sunny, even though her birth name was Soonkyu (personally, he though it was cute and it suited her, but he didn’t say anything then.) Sunny really did live up to her name as her smile rivaled even that of New York’s city lights. Overall, Jinki found her just amazingly perfect and he was so sure that she could do no wrong.
As their conversation continued on smoothly, Jinki hadn’t noticed Taeyeon’s sly smirk as she watched the two joke kindly and laugh at the strangest things. It was nice to watch, and then Sunny excused herself to visit the ladies room for a ‘quick bit,’ as she put it. He sighed happily, leaning back in his chair with arms stretched out, most of his lunch still untouched.
“So, what do you think of that little cutie?” Taeyeon’s teasing voice sounding slightly mocking. Jinki was unfazed by this as he laughed good-naturedly and shook his head in response.
“She’s just… wow, you know? Nice, and funny too,” Jinki replied, his voice full of smiles (as if it were possible.)
“She’s single. Maybe you could give it a try? Why not, right, Jinki?” she nudged his forearm with her elbow. “It’s been nearly a year and a half since you and Jessica broke it off. What do you say?” Taeyeon’s eyes sparkled as she gave ‘that look’ to Jinki.
“We’ll see,” was all he said as he pushed the glasses up the bridge of his nose.

Sunny was cute, sweet, funny, and everything else he could ever want in a girl. They had set up a get together at a café near Jinki’s university, just the two of them and it was then that he had found out that she was transferring to the art and design department. Her major was modern interior design, as her minor was music and dance.
It was breath taking to watch Sunny’s face light up when he had asked her to talk about her plans for university. Her facial expressions showed how passionate she really felt and her hand gestures emphasized everything she was saying. Jinki found it adorable; he found Sunny to be special, very much indeed.
He awkwardly grins; her response is a sweet eye-smile and Jinki swears that his heart just jumped out of his chest.
Maybe it could work.
a/n: this had been sitting in my document folder since the beginning of february, but I finaly had the motivation (and inspiration, heh) to actually finish it. I was actually planning on a different ending, but I'm pretty happy with how this turned out :)
