Last week some of my students informed me that there was a cat stuck in a tree. Upon inspection, there certainly was a cat in a tree. I called to it and it came to the lowest part it could, and I could tell that it wanted to get down but was scared to jump. It meowed to me when I called and before I could get something to stand on it jumped down. Then it didn't want to leave. It was walking around me and some students and was very friendly. I took the cat out to the fence by the field but it didn't want to leave. It let me hold it and was very happy in my arms. So I walked to the office to see what advice they would give me. One of the office ladies was freaking out because she is afraid of cats. Anyhow, I ended up taking it out to the front of the school and at first it didn't want to leave, then it ran under something.
A few days later as the bell was ringing the cat was once again at it's tree. So, I scooped it up and walked it to the office again. I told them that if we could put it in something for the day I would take it to a shelter after school. I was 1. worried about the cat because it was very bony, and 2. didn't want a student to get bitten. I met the custodian and we put it in the cat trap they have. I went back to my class and not 20 minutes later my students see a grey streak running across the courtyard. Apparently I hadn't closed/locked the trap properly. I figured that might have spooked the kitty enough so that it wouldn't come back.
But it did. Today Monica and I were finishing our lunch in the courtyard and who appears . . . my little friend. This time I decide to put her in a box. I grab a tuna packet from Monica and feed her first. In the meantime my class is super excited. They want to keep her as a class pet and some want to call their mom to ask if they can keep it. In the excitement she became named "Tuna" and was eventually put in a box that she nearly ripped out of in 5 seconds. At the end of the day it came time to take her to a shelter, I had to drive across town and regretfully took her to the county instead of the humane society which was even further away. I feel that as long as they find her healthy she will be quickly adopted because she is young, friendly, and gorgeous (all over silvery grey). If they cannot place her they will call me first and I will deal with it then.
This is Tuna and I saying good-bye, I think she is sticking her tongue out at me.
