Ito Maki Silk Thread Frame in Kyoto, Japan
This is called a "木製糸巻" or "ito maki" which held silk threads used in the making of kimonos in Kyoto's famous textile center- Nishijin-Ori Kaikan. The history of Nishijin silk weaving began with the history of Kyoto itself back in 794; by the Edo Period, there were an estimated 5,000 weaving factories in the Nishijin District. Today, the district remains home to one of Japan's largest handmade weaving industries.

These are from the early to mid 20th Century. Wooden itomaki are no longer used.
This itomaki is 13.5 cm wide and 17 cm tall. This will be shipped in a box.
My sister has some and uses them as display stands for small plants and other objects. Very unique!
