Made for the GIMP though probably easily translatable.
x-posted to
icon_tutorial,
gimp_users,
kawaii_no_icons Today we are making this icon:
We start with this image, taken from
Marvin's promotional Xanga.
We crop until we get this lovely image:
First thing we add is this text brush from
here (by
crumblingwalls) -- a new layer, in black, on 'Normal' at 50% opacity.
Then we add this gradient as a new layer atop the rest -- it is the default 'Golden' gradient on the GIMP, set to a 'bi-linear' shape, with the little marker extending from the upper left corner to the bottom right.
Duplicate this layer. Now set the bottom gradient to 'Overlay' mode at 100% opacity, and the top one to 'Burn' at 75% opacity.
Now for this layer -- the default 'Greens' layer on the GIMP, set to a 'linear' shape, little marker extending horizontally across the icon. Again, it's a new layer atop the rest.
Duplicate this one too. The bottom 'Greens' layer should be set to 'Divide' at 50% opacity, and the top layer should be set to 'Screen', also at 50% opacity.
Now, go all the way down and duplicate that original background layer. Drag the copy to the top, and set it to 'Soft light' at 50%.
Now place the text. I put the word 'searching...' in the font FFF Harmony, at 8 point, in black/#000000 (this point value may be slightly differently if you're not using the GIMP), antialias and hinting both off. The layer is set to 'Multiply' at 100%.
Finally, I selected the entire image, went to Select -> Shrink..., chose to shrink the selection 1 point, then to Select -> Invert, and colored the new selection (a 1 point border around the image) black/#000000 in a new layer.
Save, flatten, and you're done!
Comments encouraged! (This is my first tutorial after all...)
