Rant: Some Artists...

I should use this journal as a ranting jounal while I make a new one for my new website name someday soon (after spring quarter is over). After a long lapse of not drawing with tons of school work and studying, I've finally notice things online about artists and I get easily annoyed about it. Yes there are many types of artists online, but the ( Read more... )

First off, I want to make it very clear that I am in no way attacking anything you stated above. I agree with you. I'm also going to narrow down on one aspect of your rant, perhaps unfairly. Still I felt it bubbling up inside of me and I could not keep it to myself ( ... )

XP Ooops. I am a little tired, it seems.

I have to agree agree.**
Should be: "I have to agree."

Their lack of experience makes it much easier for them to fall into stereotypical.**
Should be: "...fall into THE stereotypical."

That is true, and I'm aware of those artists. But they're still open to critique regardless of circumstance, and if they don't continue to draw after having their ego busted, they didn't have a strong enough motive to draw in the first place. The artists that overcome their downfalls are more likely to improve and contribute to the art world better than one that is baby-ed through everything with their hands being held the whole time. If I remember correctly, since this is a year old, I was primarily ranting about this one shounenai artist, that has 5+ stories, and her art and story has YET to improve. The moment someone critiqued her, her fans jumped that person and she continued to fan the fire. It was just shameful to watch. I guess I shouldn't blame just the artist, but the fans that like the work. But the consumers are the consumers, they like the formulaic stuff and that's usually guaranteed to be a hit.

Why do you not put your work up?

I'm a perfectionist. Also, my style is very symbolic and less typical manga--the fanbase that I'm shooting for would have a tough time swallowing it. It's one of those things you either hate or love at first sight, which means I have to hit spot-on for even the more adaptable fans of manga to stick around. I don't really have a good wrist for the normal manga styles; everything comes out a little stiff and scratchy.

Plus, I'm really young.

I'm just going to wait and practice a little while, until I feel more confident about what I draw and who I create. That way, I guess, I can stand criticism.

Why do you draw then? Aren't we just naturally biased about our own work? How can we know when our work is "good" enough to show?

Why do I draw? I've drawn ever since I could pick up a pen. I draw because it relaxes me. I really draw because I'm a vain person, and because I want people to complement me. I used to get so many complements. Now? Not so much. Right now, I'm trying to get over the fact that the work I spend so many hours on, isn't what the public really wants. They want color; they want clean lines; heck, I don't even know what I'm doing anymore.

How can we know when our work is "good" enough to show?Well, I don't know how other people do it, but I usually submit fan art to Deviant.com and fan stories to Fanfiction.com. Once I have gotten enough good reviews that prove I can take a character and keep a steady design, I guess then I will know that I can take my own original stuff and not corrupt my ideas from what they had been in my mind. It's a slow process, but I've got all the time in the world ( ... )

o_o at least you're honest lol. So you pretty much draw for fame? That's how it seems to conclude as...?
