My grandmother and her geography

Dec 19, 2006 06:15

Tim and I have two addresses - our home address, and Tim's college. They are both in Oxford, unsurprisingly. I made the half-mistake of writing Tim's college address in the return spot on some of our Christmas cards, which is actually shorter and easier to write anyway. I thought at worst, people might think it's our new address, but if they sent things to us at Tim's college, it's still fine.

Well, I had a call from my mom last night, who said my great aunt Joan had noticed the different address and immediately called my grandmother to ask if it was a new address. Now, why she wouldn't just call my mom, I don't know. My grandmother was then entirely confused in spite of knowing that Tim is still at school, and told my great aunt Joan "Well, I know they're moving to Scotland and I thought it was going to be in March, but maybe they already have."

???????? *insert a WHAT? here as my mom was telling me this*

Now, when Tim has finished his doctorate (which might be in March, not sure), we might move to Manchester so he can do a post-doc, but that is very definitely still in England and not all that close to Scotland anyway. Besdides, we'd never have even mentioned Scotland when telling my grandmother this, and the other address Joan had was still in Oxford! So, in a right state, my grandmother called my mom, who then immediately called my great aunt Joan and got hit with a barrage of "Did they move? Why didn't they tell anyone?" My mom straightened everything out, of course, and hopefully my grandmother now knows Manchester is not in Scotland.

Ah, family.
