Did I really just apply for a job at Gap?
Oh yes, there's the confirmation e-mail to prove it. Writing and research fields just don't want me, and apparently, banks don't either. So now, I'm looking to expand my experience in clothing retail. And they actually said on their website that they are looking for the most qualified people, so if they try rejecting me on overqualification then I have my argument fully prepared. So what if they want to leave it open for a first-timer? I spent my years in foodservice and anyone else trying to get their first job can do the same.
I keep trying to remember my editor's advice about finding a job, when I explained my fears to him about not being able to continue journalism. "People are good writers and journalists because they have life experience. You can't have life experience sitting behind a desk." He has a point.
Of course, I can always plead relocation to any future employee after whatever job I get next. I just moved to England, there were limited writing jobs available and I took the first thing I could get my hands on. Well, the first thing if you rule out collecting garbage and serving food.
