Europe sings all kinds of stuff....

The Eurovision final is on in Helsinki tonight, so we're getting in some lovely country relevant food (eg olives for Greece, baguette or cheese for France, Turkish delight for well...who else but Turkey! etc...) and letting the kids stay up late. Should be fun! We even found a bottle of rather cheap looking Romanian wine. ESC has become an excuse for a family party in my house and you can never have too many of those ;)

So far our house are supporting Romania, Greece, France and Belarus, with a nod to Latvia and Bulgaria. Sadly (and rather shockingly!) Iceland's Eirikur did not make it through. Neither did emo punk rockers Andorra nor the Vampires of Switzerland. According to my hotline to Helsinki ;) there is some Eastern bloc voting going on here. Hence countries like Macedonia, Serbia, Georgia, Hungary, Moldova, Bulgaria and Belarus gate crashing the final ten of the semi (some of them not undeservedly mind). Wasn't too miffed about Hungary as I pulled them in the sweep stake and I rather like Bulgaria...but still...Eirikur was incredible and on the merits of song, voice and performance he should be in the final.

I also loved the Czech Republic - rather heavy a la Sisters of Mercy or Fields of the Nephlim - but didn't expect them to do very well as it is not mainstream music.

We'll also enjoy booing the irritating and well past his sell by date Mr Wogan. So to everyone watching, wherever you may be in the world, have fun ;)

family, esc
