Karla and the possibility of a Conservative majority government

A little background on the nightmare that is Karla Holmolka and Paul Bernardo. When I first heard that they were making a movie of the murders and sex killings of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy - I thought surely this was some sick joke. Nope, apparently someone in Hollywood thought they would capitalize on this tragic situation. I know that movies have been made about the many other murderers and this isn't so unbelievable but I was 12 years old when this happened 30 minutes down the highway from my house. I remember my parents making me watch all of the news stories and specials - the search was massive - seeing the parents on tv pleading for their daughters. I remember not being able to make the 15 minute walk to and from school alone. I remember being terrified. At the time no one knew who had taken them, and why...there were more questions than answers. The Canadian release of this movie (it's not going to be screened in St Catherine's where is all took place) is disappointing. I can definitely say that I do not want anything to do with it, I can't possibly imagine the value of such a movie here.

Now on to the even more sombre news, if that's even possible to conceive:

Stephen Harper and the Conservatives inching towards not only making the next gov't but being the next majority gov't. CBC.ca has their latest poll showing the Conservatives at 38%...not good, not good at all. My uterus and I are making contingent plans in case we are forced to flee the country on Jan 24th - France is looking good to me right now. I can hear you asking how in the world can you form a majority gov't on 38%? Well you can't on 38% - but it's certainly getting close to possible with our not-so-democratic-electoral-system. The bottom line is my country is mere days away from self-destruction --I do not want to live in the land of W. Bush-to-the-North...I mean if Harper would have had his way we'd have soldiers in Iraq...gays wouldn't be allowed to marry...and women and their uteruses would be denied the right to choose -- This is not the Canada I want, I don't want a larger military with bigger guns (we will never be able to compete with US why bother), I don't want to do away with public health care, I don't want Québec or Alberta or British Colombia to separate from the rest of Canada, etc...I could go on for days.

Sadly, this election offers little in the way of leadership - Harper, scares me, Martin, can't stand him, Layton...I could live with, Duceppe - I can't vote for his party, gotta love that the 4th major national party is a separatist party only running in Québec (I will say out of all the leaders I admire and respect him the most - he's honest and he represents his peuple to the best of his abilities). So just days before the election and it's the first time in my life, I'm not certain who I'm going to vote for.

EDIT: I saw - well heard because the preview is audio not visual - for Flight 93 I was disturbed and physically uncomfortable. I am not sure that movies need to be made about September 11th. It was strange to "see", sense the audience's reaction, it was similar to mine. Is it too soon for these movies (more are on the way)? Should they ever be made?
