Dream: The Hanging Man Dumpling

24 December 2009:

Alyssa and I sat talking with Jenna and Kayla. They told us they had gotten some [Big] salt a couple weeks ago, which was bigger than Kosher salt. They noticed the [Big] salt has a natural lemon flavor, like lemon verbena. They got help from their respective boyfriends, and the four of them started selling it in front of coffee shops.

Jenna had a geology project (or collection). Alyssa lay down on the ground and scooped out a pit in the rock with her bare hands. She pulled up a sample of gabbro and handed it to Jenna.

I walked across a court where a bunch of my friends were playing a game with people I haven't seen since elementary school. Discoflamingo was on a team with a mean guy I never liked. The mean guy threw a pair of scissors at me. They were playing a game like basketball, but there were three teams and they used five softballs. I was going to toss back their ball when it went off the court, but I couldn't figure out which one they needed.

I got a table in the patio of a restaurant where the wedding reception was held. discoflamingo joined me. My menu was small and thick with only two pages, and it only listed things I couldn't order, but every time I opened it I found part of an appetizer inside. I ate bits of chicken satay while discoflamingo looked at a regular menu.

discoflamingo and I discovered we had been playing with the mean guy because we each thought the other was his friend. We agreed to ignore his existence from then on, and were much happier for it.

Caryn joined us at the table, wearing a shiny dress of cascading purple fabric. I was happy she sat by me; I haven't seen her in a long time. At the next table, beltramgregor and musicin68 joked with the waitress, and everyone laughed.

Another waitress came to take our order. discoflamingo looked at his menu a moment more, then he said, "Why am I even looking? There's only one king. I'll have my usual."

I looked at his menu; he'd ordered [Something Foreign]. I knew it would be some vegetables served with spiced rice in a mustard sauce—everything on the menu was a variation of that—but the description for [Something Foreign] said, "Served with Gorgonzola Voodooboo and the [Hanging Man] dumpling, a savory dumpling of seed paste in a hard candy shell shaped into the [Hanging Man]."

The [Hanging Man] figure was trussed in some edible greens for rope and suspended from a gantry or gallows standing in the middle of the bowl of rice.

"Of course," discoflamingo said, "he won't make me any faster," referring to the [Hanging Man].

"That's right," the waitress said enthusiastically, "but he'll reduce the movement of all your enemies within 10 squares."

When the [Hanging Man] dumpling was used as a gamepiece, its gallows stood in a little cauldron of rice instead of the big bowl with sauce and vegetables. It was a two-player game that was played as part of a tapas-like dinner. The [Hanging Man] was a good piece, but the effect ended when you ate him.
