Netflix just emailed me to say,
"will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008."
Which essentially means that only one of us should use their rating system; if Alyssa and I both start rating movies on the same profile, it will get muddy, and start recommending slightly-romantic mildly-comedic films with brief interludes of insipid gunplay, made in Spain. Actually, it means we can only keep all the ratings we've made on the main profile (which is mine).
It also means we would have to actually coordinate our queue-meddling, which seems onerous.
We're actually considering setting up a separate account just for Alyssa in order to circumvent this problem, and then reducing our main account from 4 to 2 discs (one because Alyssa would get one, the other to mostly offset the cost of the second account.)
Which would work, but would actually reward Netflix for this change in their service, and, while I'm sure they need to save money to stay profitable, I would prefer to kick them in the knees. To that end, we're also checking out Blockbuster's competing service, which, from what I've heard, is not as good, although it allows a certain number of in-store exchanges per month.
Has anyone actually used Blockbuster's competing service?
