Thank you for all your good thoughts and prayers--I really appreciated it.
Okay, so this week Gabe and I have been spending a lot of time listening to "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" on audiobook.
Let me start off with this:
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
I love this series! Every second--the thrills, the drama, the romance, the characters--everything! It's so well thought out and the characters are absolutely riveting--from the protagonists to the three-page cameos.
And don't you just adore Peeta?!?!?!
*Squees some more*
"Catching Fire" was awesome, if a *tiny* bit slow at the beginning--though to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the point was of detailing the tour was. The only thing I can think of is to have a reason for the other districts to like her. They had a chance to meet her and she impressed them all enough to make them follow her.
I'm sure there are those who despise Finnick (let's face it, good-looking boys who aren't the protagonist always get flack) but I thought he was entirely *more* than a pretty face. Johanna was hilarious--just the right amount of sarcasm and cutting without being hateful. I admit, Beetee didn't really grow on me until "Mockingjay"--but he turned out to remind me of a friend's dad, that I came to think of him of every geek's badass hero (kind of in the way Dr. Huang is on L&O:SVU--the way they use their skills to save the day is almost inspirational). The scene between Peeta and Katniss on the beach was stunning, and I sobbed when news came that Peeta had been captured.
I know there was some controversy over "Mockingjay", and while I can see why, I still loved it. I admit, it was a bit of a relief that while Peeta was constantly on her mind, Katniss kept herself busy and doing more than pining (though I admit, as much as I enjoyed Gale as a character, I wanted to poke him away from Katniss and say firmly, "She's already taken. Move along.") Speaking of Gale, his development from the anger and bitterness he had in "HG" became the kind of ruthless, "anything-goes" attitude in "MJ"--like Katniss, I was horrified by the attack on the Nut, but that's when I knew that any hope they had together was gone.
I vastly disliked President Coin--perhaps, to a certain extent, more than President Snow. At least his attitude is well-known--he doesn't try to conceal anything. Meanwhile Coin tries to hide her barbarism behind "greater good", when really, I think there was more than her share of selfishness motives. That's what lead to the death of Prim (I admit, I teared up at that, because she reminds me of my 11-year-old sister).
I'm curious as to whether the 76th Hunger Games went on as planned, or if it was cancelled after the death of Coin. I hope so.
The highjacked Peeta was heartbreaking. A lot of fics seem to think that the "power of love" can withstand every form of torture that can be thrown. This really reminds me how that's not entirely true. His hateful words at their first official meeting made me want to sob--"you do find her special--how can you forget that?" At one point, I turned to Gabe and wailed "I want my Peeta back!" I admit to a sigh of relief at the kiss in the sewers, because all was not lost forever. (Although, Haymitch's comment about what Katniss though would happen if the roles were reversed made me wonder if there's an AU out there that discuss that.)
The epilogue, I thought, was fitting, if a bit sort. Frankly, as much as I enjoyed HP's epilogue for the information, MJ's epilogue was beautiful in it's feeling of hope, without it being a "paste-on-happy-face-yay!" It takes time to recover--but when you have people you love, there's always hope.
I can't wait for the end of March next year--the film is going to be epic win on all levels. Maybe I'll convince Gabe to see a midnight showing with me when it comes out. :-P
For the very first time, I'm honestly thinking about writing a different fanfic than HP (*gasp*). I already have an idea about doing simple "day in the life" of OC characters from each of the districts--we learned so much about District 12, that the thought of playing with the other ones is fascinating.
Anyone have any HG fanfics to suggest?
Hope you have a great weekend!
