So, I was beginning to read a HP fic today, and Gabe asks what I'm doing.
Me: I'm reading a gen fic.
Gabe: What's a gen fic?
Me (bewildered): A fic where romance is not the main focus.
Gabe: Aren't most fics that way?
Me: Um...No...not really.
He couldn't understand why there needed to be a division between romance fics and non-romance fics in the first place. "Why can't they they just divide it into genres like books--you know, adventure, mystery, drama, that sort of thing?"
I had to admit, he had a point. Why does HP fanfic (and I'm assuming other fandoms as well) seem to fall into three categories (romance, romance/other genre, and gen), rather than several genres?
And for that matter, why is genfics so under appreciated? I enjoy romance fic and, hell, even the occasional smut fic, but I love what can be done with gen fic. I, however, seem to be among the minority.
Thoughts?
P.S. I apologize if you have no interest in fanfiction--ignore this.
