me_challenge Prompt: I'm going to die, aren't I?
Characters: F!Shep, Ashley
I'm going to die, aren't I?
Shepard stood in the fields of golden grain. The stalks were almost as tall as she was, it would be harvest time soon. She passed through them, holding her arms out and running the tips of her fingers along the leaves. She emerged and looked out at the colony beyond the fields. Mindoir. Home.
But that wasn’t right. Mindoir wasn’t home anymore. Something had happened there but she couldn’t quite remember what.
“Commander” a familiar voice called.
She turned to see Ashley walking towards her. “Ash, long time, no see. How have you been?”
That didn’t seem right either. Why hadn’t she seen Ashley recently?
Virmire.
Mindoir, batarian raiders, everyone dead.
Ash, left on Virmire.
Saren dead, the Citadel saved.
Looking for geth, the Normandy attacked.
Shepard’s eyes grew wide as the memories flooded over her. She looked at Ashley, “I’m dying, aren’t I?”
Ashley smiled warmly, “The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.”
“No!” Shepard cried. “No! The reapers are coming, there is too much left to do, I have to stop them.”
She continued calmly, paying no attention to her commander’s outburst. “Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.”
Shepard shook her head in disbelief.
“I’m sorry, Commander, there’s nothing more you can do.”
Ashley held out a friendly hand. Shepard looked at it, fighting back the tears. She took a deep breath and stood up straight and proud before taking it with her own.
