g33k advice desired

so i'm slowly digitizing my cd collection, but don't have the hard drive space to support the endeavor (the lappy only has 60gigs, none of which i trust too much as it's an e machine). so i'm thinking an external hard drive is probably the sensible solution, but i'm not sure what brands are affordable and reliable. i'm guessing that 100GB would be sufficient for my needs, give or take a few gigs. might anyone out there be willing to steer me in the right direction so that i don't go wasting money on something superbly excessive or expensive? pursuant to which, if someone out there has one they're not using and would be willing to sell it to me, i'd be open to suggestion in that arena as well. i don't need fancy or sexy, just functional.
