So I've realized that, while I'm unsure who's reading here, this is probably the place where I should work out fic stuff that I don't know yet if I'm ready to post on Ao3. Probably. So if there's any takers, I've got a weird little bit of fic below.

Thinking about especially Dean and Sam from a developmental perspective--which is a little out of my wheelhouse given that they are older than six--makes me very sad but I also find it fascinating, and I think that, intentionally or not, there are aspects of their personalities in-show that are very true to how their brains would have developed given their backgrounds. Trauma, malformed or absent attachments with adults, and food/shelter/nurture insecurity in childhood? No wonder their relationships are messed up and dysfunctional, and their tempers are short, and they have unrealistic expectations for one another and the few people they do associate with. Hell, it could be a factor in Sam's addictive behavior, supernatural addictive properties of demon blood aside. Add in some repeated traumatic brain injury and the bad decision-making we see sometimes (often) makes a lot more sense.
Thank you for the encouragement--school's about to be out and I'll probably need to exercise my SPED brain so I don't lose my touch! :P

i know very little about developmental psych but from what i do know i totally agree. i'm fascinated by their childhoods in this respect (and in the respect of poverty/hunger, which i feel isn't touched on nearly enough in most fic). i think that's part of why i loved this so much. so often i think people get wrapped up in the "supernatural" element when the psychological/traumatic/real-world horror aspects are so deeply-rooted and just as fascinating. and when the two combine, as they seem to be combining here, even better!
i would absolutely die of joy if you continued this into a full-fledged fic! and of course you know where to find me if you need a beta <33

To reference your earlier comment I definitely feel like particularly the first five seasons work as well as a psychological drama as they do as a supernatural horror. There's a lot of movement in all of the social services right now around trauma and how trauma impacts development, and I could probably literally go on for days about how traumatic development might impact the story and the character arcs, particularly paired with the depiction of the main characters as low socio-economic and migrant, and and and...yeah.
I will keep this one on the burner and let you know if it's talking again! And we should chat soon about the other project I'd mentioned to you...
