Today was the first day of soft skills - socialisation, basically :3 Y'know, for those of us omega kids who basically spent our lives as the pariahs. I maintain you cannot ostracise and bully a child for eighteen years then expect them not to be a social fuck-up as an adult :-P Wellllll apparently society is realising that and this course is addressing it. Um, wow?
We were assigned to come up with the rules for the classroom. You'd think they'd been doing this long enough to already have classroom rules buuuuut saaafety scissors and paste... About a third of the way through, I realised what we were doing: Practicing corporate-style brainstorming. I noticed that our individual groups each had a mix of personality types - outspoken leaders, moderate supporters, the focused quiet ones. We'd learned about the personality types and their characteristics earlier in the week, and it was interesting to see that being acknowledged in the groups' behaviours. I wonder if anybody else realised it?
The current lifeskills module is on Wellness, which is a rather nebulous, almost meaningless term. What the hell is "Wellness?" So we were assigned to toss out what we think of when we hear "wellness." Among the associations that people tossed out were "sex," "self-respect," "love," "wisdom," "integrity," "freedom," "empowerment." And I was thinking, "Sex, Self, Passion, Pride, Power, Love, Wisdom, Knowledge, Law, Liberty." Do the Pentacles express "Wellness?" If we're on the points, do we have "Wellness?" Food for thought.
I'm happy to say I'm already getting useful stuff out of the course, even in the first week, although the personality and learning style assessments reveal nothing new to me. I've been doing that since I was three (literally - I completely identify with Sheldon Cooper's "I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested!" -- repeatedly :-P ) But it was interesting watching other people do them, some of whom had never done such things before. Even more interesting was watching how people digested the information about other people.
This week was all soft skills and some career research skills. Next week will start the hard skills of software skills upgrading. The course is made up of three modules: Career and job search skills, computer and first-aid skills, and life management skills.
Today's outfit: Black blingy jeans, black casual mary-janes, black turtleneck, blue patterned accent scarf with scarf clip. Interestingly, on Tuesday, everyone but three people were wearing rubby jeans and sweatshirts or old t-shirts. Today, only three people were wearing the rubby jeans and sweatshirts.
