Just got home from the courthouse. Took care of one of the two tickets I got at the end of January... $140 lighter in the bank account, but whatever. The second ticket I couldn't take care of. It was a non-insured ticket... which is ironic, since I'm staring at my goddamned insurance card right now. All because the fucking cop decided to be a dick ( Read more... )

My 1st traffic court visit was 11 yrs ago for a fender bender I *totally* caused. Thankfully, the woman who hit me was on her way to turn in her car that was wrecked 2 wks prior to be junked and replaced or some such by the other party's insurance in that incident so all I had was the ticket for turning inappropriately or whatever. I wore jeans to court b/c it was all I had at 20 and 7 mos PG. The judge was this terrifying bald man w/ an eyepatch even - no joke and being small town TX, I was petrified. We just waited in a line down the side of the room and were called forward to speak to him directly. I plead guilty, then he asked me if I was taking fine or defensive driving - I must have looked panicked b/c he winked his good eye at me and whispers "you want defensive driving, sweetie - clears your record and a bonus discount on your insurance." So I did. =D

The last ticket I got involving insurance was the same thing except my new card wasn't located until after I got home. The officer told me to call the court when I found it and that I didn't actually have to appear. I called and they told me if I was mailing in my fine for my expired inspection (yeah, yeah) then I could just mail in the insurance ticket with my original proof of insurance and it would be dismissed. So I took one of the extra insurance cards and did that. I checked a couple months later (last June) and it was all handled.

Personally, I think attorneys for traffic court are generally only necessary if it's regarding something involving insurance claims and/or liability issues ... or I guess if you *really* wanted to dispute a ticket and felt you had grounds to do so ... mine have always been minor moving stuff so arguing it is pretty moot.
