Cazaril awoke to the beautiful sight of his wife nursing their son. A common occurrence in the few weeks since his birth, but Caz thought he would never get used to it, not did he want to. He could stay there forever watching them. However, on this day he had other duties. He was to lead the procession for the Father’s Day celebrations. It was not a position he had welcomed however proud his fatherhood had made him. Iselle had insisted and when her command had been backed up with Betriz’s dazzling smile he had been powerless to resist. Rising from his bed he crossed the room to kiss wife and son.

“Good morning,” whispered Betriz pulling her gaze from the nursing child. “How do you feel?” His nervousness at the coming events not going unnoticed.

Caz paused, he was sill uncomfortable at being the centre of attention but was becoming used to it in his role as Chancellor. But today the attention was due to his personal life. The same had been true at their wedding, however then he had taken comfort in the majority of attention being directed at Betriz as the beautiful bride. Today he would be the sole focus. As he thought about it though, it did not feel as uncomfortable as he previously thought. He was proud of his small son, of being a father and actually it felt nice to be acknowledged as such. Aware that he had been quiet for a while following Betriz’s question, he turned to look at her and found her gazing at him with concern.

“I know you did not want to do this Caz. But it will be fine, I promise. We are both so proud of you. You have some fine new clothes,” her eyes gleamed, “and I can’t wait to see you in them.”

Caz smiled. “Anything for my lady.”

He then crossed the room to kneel at her side. They shared a tender kiss until the child in her arms squealed for their attention.  Both parents doted on their child until it was time to go down for breakfast.

Dressed in his new garments Caz strode out to join the possession. The day was cold but bright and there was a sense of joy in the air as the royal party made their preparations. Betriz, leaving the baby in the care of his nurse, entered the courtyard at Iselle’s side, both wrapped up against the chill. Spying him in the line-up the ladies walked over with beaming smiles on their faces.

“Cazaril, fatherhood appears to suit you, you look well. Maybe you could give Bergon some advice,” she said with a smile, darting her eyes to her husband stood at Cazaril’s side. “Next year it may be his turn.”

Caz bowed and nodded before casting a raised eyebrow at a bashful Bergon. Iselle offered him her hand to kiss before taking her place in the procession.

Betriz stepped forward and kissed him. “Good luck. I love you and I’m so proud of you.”

Caz, filled with emotion, could only nod in response before she turned to follow Iselle. Caz took a deep breath and then lead the procession down into the town. The cheering crowds were a wondrous sight but it was the image of that morning, of the quiet moment with his wife and child that carried him forward.
