Two-thirds of Team!Shortbus went to see Watchmen last night.
The Candy Bar: I'm not a comic book person. I went along to see this movie purely because Jeffrey Dean Morgan was in it. (And to hang out with Team!Shortbus) Sure I have comic books at home but they all have titles like Buffy: Season 8, Serenity: Those Left Behind, Supernatural: Origins, Supernatural: Rising Son... Are you seeing a pattern?
Looking around at the Candy Bar I realised the other people in the line for this movie probably all had 'real' comic books. Shelves full of superhero and non-TV-tie-in comic books at home. They were here to see it because it was Watchmen not because Papa!Winchester was in it. Others probably thought it just looked good. It's funny how many different reasons people see a movie.
Oh, yeah. We all got Watchmen Combos. We had Jeffrey Dean Morgan on our drink cups, yo! \O/
The Theatre: The theatre was fairly crowded and somehow the cinema sold our seats twice and unfortunately the other people who had bought the same seats were already sitting there when we got there. Luckily, we found some other seats which were just as good.
The Movie: OMG! EPIC! (and I don't use that word lightly) It's such a complex story to tell and going back to my first point about why people see movies, this is one of those movies which had to cater for such a diverse audience. Those who know the comic back to front, those who vaguely remember it or at least know the story and those who have very little knowledge about it. I definitely fall into the latter category. Even though I own the graphic novel I've only read a bit of it and yet I was able to follow the story for the most part. Certainly more than enough to get an awful lot of enjoyment out of it.
After the movie Team!Shortbus and I discussed the parts we were confused about didn't affect the story at all. They were pretty much like the regular questions you have after most movies because you didn't quite catch a line here or there or when you suddenly find yourself wondering if Jensen and Jared will go see the movie together so they can see daddy on the big screen. (What? No one else has thought about that?) Fortunately for us most of our questions were answered by Robyn was able to clear up because she had actually read the comic.
It's epicness transcends many levels. It's an epic story. It has epic affects. It has epic characters. It has epic gore. OMG! How glad am I this one wasn't in 3D? Holy Crap! On the plus side, if you're a bit gueasy you can see most of the really horrible stuff coming. Just put your hands over your eyes. It worked for me. *nods*
The Music: The soundtrack is awesome and nothing like I expected. I'm definitely not going spoil it for you by telling you what's included. :)
The Length: Yeah, at two hours and forty minutes it's long but at no point did I feel it dragged or that it was too long. There are times when it's a little slow but it's never tedious watching. Take a drink and a snack, go to the bathroom before it starts, and you're all set for a great three hours.
