She laid with her head on his shoulder, gazing up at the night sky and a seemingly infinite blanket of twinkling, smiling stars. “Do you ever think,” she asked softly, “they are smiling down on us?”
Her long, black hair was cascading over his face and shoulders; she felt his mustache twitch as he smiled. “Oui, mon amour, all the time. And why shouldn’t they smile?” He lifted her hand and kissed it. “They are looking down at the most beautiful woman in the existence.”
“And the most beautiful man,” she purred, kissing the stubble on his pale cheek. “To think we celebrate one decade together tonight.”
“With many, many more to come, ‘Tish.”
“What makes you so sure of that, mon coeur?”
“Simple.” He kissed her hand again. “I’m not going anywhere as long as you’ll have me.”
“Then I shall have you forever,” she answered, turning in his arms and placing another kiss on his cheek, “bubeleh.” She felt his immediate response as she kissed his neck and then his mouth and filed away that nickname for later. It was quite fitting, after all, for no one was and would ever be as dear to her as him.
