The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you

Doesn't this mean that the grandad in the situation physically sweated handbags and gladrags in order to purchase his grandson/daughter?

I suppose The handbags and the gladrags for which your poor old grandad had to sweat to buy you doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
