Gated Community

So in a gated community near Orlando, Florida, a 17-year-old named Trayvon Martin (a visitor to the area) walked to a 7-Eleven to buy some Skittles and a can of iced tea. On his way back, the neighbourhood watch captain, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, called the police because he believed Trayvon looked "suspicious". The police told him not to confront the boy, and that they would send an officer. Zimmerman, who had a gun, confronted the boy anyway, and they had a skuffle, during which Zimmerman shot Martin and killed him.

It wasn't until Trayvon's father called 911 to report Trayvon as missing that the parents found out what had happened. An officer was sent to the parents' home, with a photograph of a dead Trayvon, shown with blood running out of his nose, and they were asked if that was their dead son.

George Zimmerman has claimed self defense, which has been accepted by the police, due to a claimed "squeaky clean" record. Except that he's been previously arrested for battery on a police officer. No charges are being pressed against him for this murder. In fact, a police officer "corrected" a neighbour who tried to explain that they'd heard Trayvon scream. The officer, who had not been there, insisted it was Zimmerman who had cried for help.

I wonder if Trayvon Martin would be accorded the same benefit of the doubt, had he been the pursuer, and the killer?

A quote from the local police chief, Bill Lee:

"The hysteria, the media circus, it’s just crazy. It’s the craziest damn thing I’ve ever seen, and it’s sad. It’s sad for the city of Sanford, the police department, because I know in my heart we did a good job."

The MEDIA is what's sad about this situation?! Fuck this piece of shit. Even if there was absolutely no wrong-doing on the part of Zimmerman or the part of the police, the police chief should be making a statement more respectful and sorrowful of the young life that's been stupidly lost, of the family that's been devastated. The fact that this was a senseless murder of an unarmed teenager who was minding his own business means this police chief should be down on his knees begging forgiveness of the family and the community.

And people wonder why African Americans don't trust the police? Not only do they regularly gun down members of the African American community, but they do everything they can to ensure anyone who does escapes justice. Everyone was shocked and outraged about pepper spray used against Occupy protestors, as if the police haven't regularly brutalized people for no fucking reason. As if they don't act simply as thugs who uphold systemic oppression.

Fuck this shit. George Zimmerman had better never get another solid night's sleep as long as he lives.
