I'm trying to write a balanced letter to New York state senators asking for them to support the potential same-sex marriage bill that's coming from the governor. It's really hard to dissociate myself from the anger I feel towards all the "Yes on Prop 8" people and other anti-gay rhetoric that's been floating around my school lately. I don't know why, but for some reason I take this issue very seriously, almost personally, even though I don't count myself as a member of the gay and lesbian community. I just hate the fact that people are so fucking blinded by their religion that they can't even consider alternative viewpoints. The law isn't about getting married in a church, it's about CIVIL marriage. Our country was founded on the separation of church and state, and yet so many politicians are so strangled by their religious beliefs that I don't think many of them can even think for themselves. I get the fact that people think God made separate sexes for a reason, but the Bible says lots of crazy shit too. When you look at the situation, there are absolutely no arguments against same-sex marriage that are based in secular research and ideas, and yet people still refuse to see that they're wrong. I get really, really frustrated by it.
I've also come to the conclusion that, if Pope Benny keeps up his idiotic speeches about how condoms are making the AIDS crisis worse, I'll probably end up leaving the church. I just can't take the bullshit anymore, but I've been lucky enough to find a few priests who are pretty liberal and can help me understand why people are stupid sometimes.
