you cant take it with you or, the year of living gracefully

Today I flossed my teeth with the world's shortest piece of dental floss. It was about 2 inches to be exact and I got to my canines before I looked into the mirror and then promptly stopped caring.

I am rounding off my forth and final week here in Austin and while it's been interesting to say the least, I am looking forward to rolling around in my shitty ikea mattress with unabandoned glee. I've managed to fill two suitcases with...well stuff. I have no idea what random assortment of things I managed to stuff in the first of the two, only that there was not nearly enough room to fit the rest of the stuff that I wanted to carry back with me.

Lucky finds included:

my nikon SLR from 2003
my sister's nice fluffy winter jacket
missing boots
a collection of personal correspondence circa summer of 2002

I also managed to shove three tomes that I recently got as presents/bought which I managed to shove a pretty hardcover collection of jane austen novels, the ecco collection of american short stories and that portable Dorthy Parker I'd been eying for ages.

I am going to break my back. Hurray for 7 hour flights and even longer day afterward.

So 2008, let's see. The general consensus for people around me has been that 2008 has really sucked but I so far haven't taken inventory

In 2008:

I graduated from Harvard with my Masters +8
Had little personal life to speak of due to being busy/Boston winter -4

Spent the summer working at TCT again +4
Made some new friends +3
Ran into my exes more than I would have liked -2

Got accepted into UWash with a full ride +8
Road tripped to Seattle +5
...with my parents -2
...while seriously ill -3

Moved into awesome new house with cool roommates +6
Realized that I must walk uphill everyday to get to school -1

Made some great new friends +7
Realized I was in a all-Latino posse +/- 1

Got a paid month of vacation off in December +4
Still was broke -2
Worked at TCT again +3
Dog was put down -6
Seriously sweated some small stuff -5

So that makes the grand arbitrary total to be..... +24!! Humm... well at least it's not negative. So 2008 may not have sucked but situations in the past few weeks have but there's not sense in kicking the whole year down now is it.

Let's make 2009 about doing the things that I was meant to do, or rather doing the things that I can do instead of ignoring them of feeling like they aren't great enough to put any time into. Just cause they make me happy.

Also, applying the appropriate level of emotion to fit the circumstance. Life can be strange and terrible and weird and awkward, but mostly great so focus on that or I'll really give you something to cry about, as my father would say. just kidding, i doubt he ever said that.

Ready 2009? Ok 1..2..3.. Go!
