My Spike is definitely the purriest cat I know. That's kind of neat, actually, since his other main feature is that he's huge, so long and fat that he looks like a sofa cushion with limbs. He's the Marlon Brando of cats. If I'd known that when I got him I would never have called him Spike, no matter how many times a week they had reruns of Press Gang.
Anyway. He's truly extremely purry. He'll purr not only when we pet him, but also when we speak to him, when we enter a room that he's in, when he begs for food... any time when we pay him attention or he wants us to pay him attention.
And that's a bit funny, because he's really not all that friendly. He hates strangers, for one thing, although he can let some people pet him if he knows them well. My parents and I are really the only people he lets close, and even that isn't some sort of all-consuming love. He likes us around, and sometimes I get to keep him in my lap, but he's big on the freedom thing. (As am I, for that matter, so we fit well together.)
In comparison, there are a couple of cats on the way between my parents' place and here that are quite friendly. The other day, one of them walked up on my lap and started kissing me all over my face, repeatedly. But he didn't purr. Those are non-purry cats.
I wonder what causes some cats to be purrier than others, if it's just personality quirks or if they're raised differently.
