I was wondering to myself, how is it that I can be a fan of some of Joss Whedon's things, while other stuff he does just makes me want to punch him in the face? (And no, not just the killing characters.)
Then I thought, hang on, what is it I like, specifically? I enjoyed Buffy, but I never developed quite the level of love for it that other fans did, and most of my favourite characters were minor ones. I loved the middle of Firefly, but not the beginning and end. I thought The Avengers had about half an hour of good material between the over-quipping, the pointless plot, and the tiresome action. I decidedly hated Cabin in the Woods. I never saw Dollhouse, or Doctor Horrible. The show I was actually, actively fannish about was Angel. Which isn't to say that it didn't have its problems, because it did, but the basic nature of it made me more fannish than the other stuff. And it did have a tendency to use characters from Buffy and make them better. Well, except for Cordelia, who was first better and then worse.
So, checking out the credits for that, and for the middle of Firefly... maybe I'm not primarily a Joss Whedon fan. Maybe I'm a David Greenwalt fan (ooh, Profit!) or a Tim Minear fan, or a fan of some of the other writers/directors, and I just never realized because fandom's love was directed at Joss.
I may need to watch Grimm, to check this hypothesis.
